How dangerous is distracted driving?

November 10, 2015

From drunk driving to icy roads, there are a number of factors that play a role in car accidents. Although many people hear about accidents involving drunk drivers from news reports, it is important to be aware of some of the other dangers that contribute to collisions and may not always receive as much attention, such as distracted driving. In Pikeville, and across Kentucky, distracted driving poses serious risks to drivers and everyone else on the road and all drivers should realize how dangerous this behavior truly is.

According to the Official U.S. Government Website for Distracted Driving, more than 3,000 people lost their lives in accidents that involved a distracted driver in 2013. Also, roughly 424,000 people were hurt in distracted driving accidents over the course of the same year. Furthermore, statistics revealed that 10 percent of drivers who died in a car accident and were under 20 were distracted when the wreck occurred, which highlights how dangerous distracted driving is for younger drivers. Examples of distracted driving include cell phone use, sending or reading text messages, eating, socializing with other people in the vehicle, reading a map and even changing the radio station.

If you were hit by a distracted driver, you should promptly address the accident and explore all avenues. For some people, taking legal action is necessary and can help them receive compensation they deserve.
