How prevalent is distracted driving in Kentucky?

August 13, 2015

With texting and driving, drowsy driving and a drunk driver deciding to get behind the wheel, there are a number of reasons why car crashes continue to take place. In Pikeville, Kentucky, distracted driving is particularly dangerous and it is essential for people to be aware of how dangerous a distracted driver really is. While distracted driving has not always received as much attention as driving while under the influence, the consequences of an accident are just as serious.

The Kentucky Office of Highway Safety’s website published startling statistics on the prevalence of distracted driving in the state. According to the KOHS, 170 people died in a car accident that involved distracted driving in 2014 throughout Kentucky. Furthermore, distracted driving played a role in over 53,000 collisions across the state during the same year. Among these accidents, more than 14,000 injuries took place, which reveals just how widespread and dangerous distracted driving really is in the Bluegrass State.

In fact, studies show that driver inattention is the central factor in a majority of car accidents across the U.S. Findings have revealed that almost 80 percent of auto accidents involved some type of driver inattention right before a car collision occurred. Drivers may be distracted for many reasons, including using their cell phone, eating and talking to other people in the vehicle. If you were hurt in an accident that was caused by a distracted driver, you should explore every option and may want to think about filing suit.
