The effects of a traumatic brain injury, or TBI, can last for years. In some cases, victims experience repercussions for the rest of their lives. However, many people still do not understand the prevalence or severity of TBI.
For over 30 years, the Brain Injury Association of America has observed Brain Injury Awareness Month. This national awareness campaign aims to educate the public about the rate, causes and effects of brain injuries. To assist with this goal, we have compiled some important information that you should know about TBI.
What is TBI?
A traumatic brain injury is when the skull experiences a sudden trauma such as a blow. This trauma can cause mild, moderate or severe harm to the brain. The results of TBI can include:
· Concussions
· Dizziness
· Balance problems
· Memory loss
· Speech difficulties
· Change in personality
· Coma
How many people suffer TBI?
It is a common misconception that brain injuries are rare. To the contrary, they occur all too frequently:
· Over 2.5 million Americans experience a TBI every year.
· Currently, between three and five million Americans have disabilities due to TBI.
· One hundred and thirty-seven people die every day from head or brain injuries.
Anyone can experience a TBI. However, most of these injuries happen to children or the elderly because they are more likely to slip and fall.
What causes TBI?
Many activities can lead to head injuries. Some of the most common include:
Falls-Falling from a high place like a ladder can cause TBI, as can slipping and falling on the ground.
Auto accidents-Car, truck and motorcycle crashes also cause serious brain injuries, especially if the skull strikes the steering wheel or dashboard.
Violent attacks-Although violent assaults are rare, the victim may suffer TBI if the assailant strikes their head.
What to do if you experience a TBI
No one believes that they will injure their brain. But these incidents can happen to anyone, nearly anywhere. If you suffer a head injury, the first thing you should do is seek medical attention. You should also get the name, contact number and insurance information of the other party involved, if any. Try to document the scene of the accident by taking photographs. Finally, you may need to seek compensation from the negligent party or your insurance company to pay for your damages.
