Know what to do when an uninsured motorist hits you

July 9, 2015

By law, motorists in Kentucky are required to carry auto insurance. Unfortunately, too many people allow their coverage to collapse or simply never purchase it. The Insurance Information Institute reports that roughly one in eight drivers in 2012 lacked car insurance. At Gary C. Johnson, P.S.C., Attorneys at Law, we know how frustrating it can be to get into an accident with an uninsured motorist. There are a few steps you can take to ensure you receive compensation for your damages.

Following any accident, you should always call for emergency medical assistance in the event someone has suffered an injury. Your next call should be to law enforcement officers, who can arrive on the scene and create an official record of the incident. This is especially important when an uninsured motorist is involved, as are any pictures you can take of the damage. The officer will gather the information of the uninsured driver, but you should as well. You should also get contact information for anyone who witnessed the crash.

Experts also recommend that you do the following:

  • Call your insurance provider
  • Seek medical attention when necessary and save all bills
  • Get your vehicle repaired and keep all copies of bills

If you have uninsured motorist coverage, your insurance policy should cover all your damages. However, there are situations in which your provider will try to shortchange you on your benefits. Our attorneys at Gary C. Johnson, P.S.C., Attorneys at Law work diligently to recover damages for people in these circumstances.
