Residential construction workers are at risk of injury

As a residential construction worker, such as somebody who builds new homes, you love the fast paced action associated with your job.

What you may not love, however, is the potential for injury. Even if you do your best to avoid an accident, you never know what could happen in the future.

On the plus side, there are steps you can take to prevent construction accidents. For example, you can inspect equipment, such as ladders, before using it. Along with this, you can wear protective gear.

Note: Your employer should also be doing their part in protecting you and other workers from accidents.

Some of the most common types of construction site accidents include:

  • Fall from height. For example, if you’re working on a ladder or scaffolding, a fall to the ground could cause serious injury. This could result in a traumatic brain injury (such as a concussion) or broken bones among other injuries.
  • Falling objects. If a person working at height accidentally drops an object, such as a power tool, it could strike somebody standing below.
  • Equipment accident. As you know, construction sites are full of equipment. While these tools make it easier to complete the job, they also come with many risks. You should only use equipment that has been properly maintained. Also, don’t attempt to use a tool that you don’t understand.
  • Fires and explosions. This may not be a common type of accident on a residential construction site, but it could happen. As a result, you could be seriously injured, such as extensive burns, or even killed.

While these are some of the most common types of residential construction site accidents, there are others to be aware of as well.

If you’re injured at a construction site, don’t hesitate to do two things:

  • Receive medical attention.
  • Notify your employer of what happened (include as many details as possible).

By taking these steps, you’ll find it easier to receive compensation for your injuries in the future. This holds true regardless of if you’re filing a workers’ compensation claim or interested in filing a lawsuit against a negligent party. Either way, you want to put yourself in position to receive compensation.
